Best Brunch in KL
The weekend has arrived and that means no waking up early, no alarms and two days of hibernation! Unfortunately, unlike our other mammalian cousins like bears, humans can’t cram a bunch of food into their bodies and then sleep for a few days (without a few consequences, that is). You’re bound to wake up, eventually.
And when you find yourself waking up only when the birds have longed ceased chirping, the Sun already shining high in the sky but most importantly, when your stomach starts grumbling, it only means one thing: it’s time to get some grub from the best brunch places in KL (halal and non-halal)!
1. Milligram Cafe, Petaling Jaya (Non-halal)
A simple colour layout of white with only a splash of calming turquoise, don’t let Milligram Cafe’s minimalistic interior fool you. The meals & desserts they serve up are anything but.
Serving a well-balanced fusion of Asian and Western dishes, Milligram Café offers customers a variety of meals from rice bowls, pasta, sandwiches and more zany desserts like Nestum Bacon French Toast and Rum Raisin ice cream with bacon.
Address: No. 8, Jalan SS 26/4, Taman Mayang Jaya, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Opening hours: Monday – Friday: 10am – 11pm, Saturday & Sunday: 11am – 11pm
Telephone: 03-7497 4358
With such an interesting fusion of food, Milligram Cafe might be the place to get the best brunch in KL.
2. Zǎo – Breakfast Anytime, Petaling Jaya (Non-halal)
Although Zao translates to “early”, as the name suggests, you could probably come here long after the sun has set and still get the best brunch in KL, social constructs such as time be damned. However, do note the café closes at 3pm on weekdays and 4pm on weekends so social constructs still matter here, sadly.
Moving along, Zǎo really stays true to its name by serving ONLY breakfast options with their speciality being toasted sandwiches.
However for the true Asian in you, Zǎo also serves up rice bowls and for those on a keto-diet, a low-carb option is available too!
Address: 50, Jln 19/3, Seksyen 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Opening hours: Wednesday closed. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 6am – 3pm. Saturday – Sunday: 8am – 4pm
Telephone: 011-2828 9173
Definitely worth a visit whenever you’re in PJ and craving some tasty toasty sandwiches.
3. Lim Kee Cafe, KL (Non-halal)
Ah, Petaling Street, just something about this place that will always capture our nostalgic senses and it’s no different with Lim Kee Cafe, a modern-day Kopitiam located on the ground floor of Tian Jing Hotel.
But unlike the other cafes on this list, Lim Kee Cafe does not serve main meals here. Their menu keeps it simple by serving kaya & butter toast (roti bakar), soft boiled eggs and cakes.
Truly like an authentic Kopitiam, no?
But if a heavy brunch was never the idea, Lim Kee Cafe has a diverse drinks menu which offers customers a selection of coffees (of course), teas, soda-based mocktails and even craft beers.
What we at The Cool Bears would do for one of those refreshing drinks now!
Drop on by Lim Kee Cafe if you crave authentic Kopitiam dishes for brunch but can’t wake up early enough for that.
Address: 66-68, Jalan Sultan, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: Monday – Sunday: 9:30 am – 6pm
Telephone: 03-2022 1131
4. Mingle Café, KL (Halal)
Another great thing about Petaling Street? The refurbished buildings that still maintain their historical heritage albeit with a modern twist. It’s no different with a café just a few shops away from Lim Kee called Mingle Café. With the former shop lot cum café’s beautiful rustic aesthetic, its menu definitely prove it’s not just style over substance. Fusing cuisines from the Middle East, Malaysia, London to Hong Kong, you will definitely be back for more.
From smoothie bowls to burgers infused with local flavours (such as a petai burger!) and of course the big breakfast to win all big breakfast – 55 Big Breakfast which consists of Chicken and Cheese Sausage, Beef Bacon or Turkey Ham, Roasted Field Mushroom, Confit Tomatoes, Kaya Sandwich, Scrambled Egg, Chocolate Strawberry Donut.
With many plug points around the cafe, we also highly recommend anyone looking for a cool, cosy spot to study/work to make the journey to Mingle Cafe now! And have a damn good ol’ brunch too!
Address: 55, Jalan Sultan, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: Monday – Sunday: 7:30 am – 10pm except Friday & Saturday: 7:30 am – 11pm
Telephone: 019-222 0262
5. Pokok KL Café, Petaling Jaya (Halal)
Ever wanted to own a glasshouse but it’s just unthinkable to do so in this hot & humid climate? Well… you’re still not gonna own one but you can have brunch in one now!
Located in Mahsa University which might seem like a weird hangout spot but hey, the moment you enter Pokok KL, all your doubts will wash away (just like how the rain washes away from Pokok’s all-glass structure).
Pokok KL will be the perfect brunch spot in KL for couples or groups who can’t settle for local or Western cuisine as they serve up an irresistible menu consisting of both.
If you need a quick getaway from the city, Pokok KL is the place for you with its glasshouse of sun rays drenching you with Vitamin D and plants abound.
Address: MAHSA Avenue, Block B, Jalan Elmu, off, Jalan Universiti, 59100 Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: Monday – Sunday: 9am – 9pm EXCEPT Tuesdays: 9am – 7pm
Telephone: 03-8408 1811
6. Kettlebell, KL (Halal)
For you gym-goers or exercise junkies, just by seeing the name of this cafe you already know The Cool Bears isn’t forgetting you health-conscious folks who still need a filling & nutritious brunch.
When we think healthy, we think “bland, uninteresting and green, green, green” but Kettlebell is going to prove that wrong!
Despite being named after a piece of exercise equipment, Kettlebell is no testosterone-driven, protein shake only place. With a charming pink aesthetic, Kettle demonstrates that healthy food can be good for you AND your Instagram feed.
And if you’re feeling extra vigorous that day, under the same roof as Kettlebell is famously known gym boutique, Firestation Fit 2!
Directly next to Kettlebell so no excuses!
So whether you’ve just completed the most intense workout of your life at Firestation or keeping your cheat meal for dinner, pay Kettlebell a visit because who said the best brunch in KL should leave you with overwhelming nausea & guilt?
